Born in the town of Colmesneil, Tyler County, Texas, on February 2, 1903. His father was born in Columbus, Texas, and his mother in Milam County, Texas. Both lived to be 82 years of age. George was educated in the Woodville Schools in Woodville, Texas.
He received the standard and pre-standard certificates in the American School of Banking. He has had over thirty-five years experience in banking. He retired from the Texas National Bank of Commerce, Houston, Texas, on February 29, 1968, and was Assistant Cashier at the time of his retirement. He worked for the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank for 15 years. Served as President of the Federal Credit Union and a member of the Board of Directors for ten years. He is a member of Terrace Methodist Church, Houston, and has served in many capacities in the Church.
Was made a Master Mason on May 28, 1924, in Reagan Lodge No. 1037, A.F. & A.M., at Houston, Texas. Was Exalted to the Sublime Degree of Royal Arch Masons on March 11, 1925, in Will N. Kidd Chapter No. 424, R.A.M., and served as High Priest during 1930-31. Was Greeted a Select Master on April 1, 1925, in San Jacinto Council No. 347, R.&S.M., and served as Thrice Illustrious Master during 1928-29. He received the Order of the Temple in Ruthven Commandery No. 2, K.T., November 24, 1944. He is a member of Arabia Shrine Temple in Houston, since 1946. Received the Scottish Rite Degrees in April, 1967. Received the Legion of Honor Degree, DeMolay, on April 12, 1967.
He served the Grand Council as Grand Marshal in 1960 and as Grand Captain of the Guards in 1962. He is the Grand Representative of Nebraska near the Grand Council of Texas. Served the Grand Chapter of Texas as Orator in 1953. Holds certificates of proficiency in the Esoteric Work in both the Chapter and Council. Member of the Order of Silver Trowel in Texas and Louisiana, and a member of the Order of High Priesthood.
At present time he is serving as Secretary and Recorder of the Chapter and Council and has served for the past twenty years.
In November, 1965, he was elected R:I: Grand Principal Conductor of the Work, advanced to the office of R:I: Deputy Grand Master in 1966, and was elected and installed as M:I: Grand Master on December 5, 1967, and presided at the Annual Assembly in December, 1968.
He was married to Martha Lovejoy Burks on December 16, 1925. She passed away on June 30, 1963. He has one daughter, Mrs. J.A. Dyson, two grandsons and one granddaughter.
