Was born in Lott, Falls County, Texas, on May 29, 1895, the son of Dr. Marshall A. Hayes, Sr., and Cora Scott Hayes. Graduate of Lott High School and Texas Christian University, majoring in Geology. Was a Student Instructor during the last two years. A geologist, he has worked for major oil companies and consulting firms throughout the United States and Mexico since 1916. During World War I, he served in the Chemical Warfare Service of the United States Army. Since 1925, he has been a consultant and an independent oil producer. He holds the distinction of being the first professional geologist from Texas Christian University, and is a member of various professional scientific bodies.
Was married on October 2, 1937, to Miss Ruth Hock, of Loraine, Texas.
He is a member of the Olney Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he has taught an adult Bible class for the last ten years.
Raised a Master Mason in Olney Lodge No. 790, A.F. & A.M., on April 10, 1945. Was Worshipful Master in 1953. District Deputy Grand Master in 1955.
Exalted in Olney Chapter No. 307, R.A.M., on August 13, 1945. Was High Priest of Olney Chapter in 1950. Was District Deputy Grand High Priest in 1951. Grand Captain of the Host in 1952. He is Grand Representative of the Grand Chapter of Nevada near the Grand Chapter of Texas. Received the Order of High Priesthood I 1950, and served as M:E: Grand High Priest of the Grand Council of Anointed High Priesthood of Texas in 1958.
Greeted in Olney Council No. 242, R.&S.M., on September 20, 1945. Was Thrice Illustrious Master in 1950. Was Grand Visitor in 1952. He is now Grand Representative of the Grand Council of Louisiana near the Grand Council of Texas. Was elected Illustrious Grand Principal Conductor of the Work in 1956. Was elected and installed Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Masters of Texas on December 2, 1958, and presided at the Annual Assembly in 1959.
Charter member of the Order of the Silver Trowel in Texas. Was Thrice Illustrious Master in 1956.
Dubbed and created a Knight Templar in Wichita Falls Commandery No. 59 on October 18, 1945. Affiliated with Godfrey Commandery No. 37, Jacksboro, Texas, in 1953. Was Eminent Commander in 1956.
