Obituary

Longtime Dallas resident and Masonic Leader, born September 2, 1932, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, to L. U. and Velma Chance, Loyd Chance passed away May 27, 2011 at his home in Dallas at age 78. While in high school he joined the United States Army, and served in the Korean conflict, receiving the Bronze Star. After being Honorably Discharged in 1953 he returned to Dallas and entered the trucking business. Loyd was generous with his time and talents, supporting many church and community activities, especially the Masonic Fraternity. He served in many leadership positions, was honored as a 50 year member in all of the York Rite bodies, and remained an active and enthusiastic member until his death. His faithful service included Worshipful Master of Metropolitan Lodge #1182, and District Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Texas in 2004; Past High Priest of Dallas Chapter #47, Royal Arch Masons, and in 2000, District Deputy Grand High Priest; Past Thrice Illustrious Master of Dallas Council #18, Royal & Select Masters, and Treasurer 1997-2010 in both Chapter and Council; Commander of Dallas Commandery #6, Knights Templar in 1972 and 1986; Grand Recorder of the Grand Commandery of Texas from 1987 to 2011; elected Honorary Past Grand Commander in 2003, and Grand Recorder Emeritus in 2011. His patriotic and charitable involvements included serving as President of Audie Murphy Chapter #112, National Sojourners; Commander of Goliad Camp, Heroes of �76; Secretary-Treasurer of L. A. Pires Charitable Foundation for the past 10 years, and Executive Director of the Dallas Masonic Service Bureau from 2004-2007. Loyd was a member of many honorary and invitational Masonic Bodies, including the York Rite College serving as Governor, and then as Grand Governor of Texas from 2006-2010; Grand Treasurer of St. Thomas of Acon; Preceptor of the Texas Order of Knights Preceptor; Preceptor of Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests; Sovereign Master of the Allied Masonic Degrees; member of the Red Cross of Constantine, Knight Masons, and the Royal Order of Scotland. A longtime member of the Dallas Scottish Rite, in 2003 he was made a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor, and in 2006, he served as Master of Kadosh for Dallas Consistory. Never seeking accolades or the limelight, Loyd received many of the highest honors in Freemasonry, including Knight Commander of the Temple, DeMolay Legion of Honor, Knight York Cross of Honor, and in March 2011, at a special ceremony in the Dallas Scottish Rite Cathedral, he received both the Dallas Scottish Rite Meritorious Service Award, and the Service Award of the Sovereign Grand York Rite College of North America. Loyd was a man�s man, and a Mason�s Mason, and mentored many over the years, by precept and example. He is survived by his wife, champion, and traveling companion for the past 25 years, �Patty Lou� (Scoot), children Craig Chance and wife Karen, Jay Tharp and Wife Peggy, Gary Tharp and wife Heather, grandchildren Brittany Chance, and Kaitlyn, Carson, and Reid Tharp, and a host of friends and Brothers. In lieu of flowers please make donations to one of Loyd�s favorite charities, the Knights Templar Eye Foundation. Visitation and viewing 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 31. Funeral Wednesday, June 1, 2:00 p.m. at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tom Keithly, with burial to follow. Reception to follow at the Dallas Masonic Temple, 500 South Harwood, downtown Dallas.
