Obituary

Son of William Dewey Smith and Carrie Malissa Fowler. Beloved husband and life companion of Loucel Lanning Smith. He was held in high esteem where ever his path led him in life and he never met a stranger. Always smiling, Charles had a great sense of humor and a quick wit. Charles had high integrity and set a high mark for others to emulate. Following his marriage to Loucel Lanning in 1952, Charles and his wife moved his mother, Carrie, twin sisters Betty and Bobbie, and brother, Alvin from Knoxville, TN to their home in Ocean Springs, MS. Charles and Loucel moved to Seguin, TX in the spring of ’58 along with his mother who eventually traveled back to MS to live with her daughter, Bobbie. Charles and Loucel raised his youngest brother, Alvin, in MS and TX from the age of 10 until Alvin graduated high school in Seguin, TX. During that period of time, Charles became a Boy Scout leader taking on the task of fathering and mentoring Alvin. Charles held so many different offices in the Masonic organization of which he was a life member that are too numerous to name. Charles was also an usher at the First Baptist Church in Seguin. Loved by all who knew him, Charles excelled in everything he had a hand in, including his 30 years in the US Air Force. During his time in Korea he achieved Sgt Major status. Loucel lovingly displayed many of Charles’ honorable, high achievement, meritorious awards throughout their home.

NOTE: The birth date for Charles is incorrect on the cemetery stone. His correct birth date was 20 February 1927, according to his wife, Loucel, his brother, Alvin, his military papers and the Social Security Death Index.
