Archibald St. Clair Ruthven was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1818. He immigrated to Texas during the early days of the Republic and resided in the Houston and Galveston area.
His Masonic career started September 12, 1841, when he was initiated in Holland Lodge No. 1 and was raised two months later on October 24. It is believed that Sir Knight Ruthven received his Chapter degrees in Houston Chapter No. 8 and it is not known when he received the Commandery Orders. However, in February 1848, he was listed with those requesting dispensation to form Ruthven Commandery.
Sir Knight Ruthven served as Worshipful Master of Holland Lodge No. 1 from 1844 to 1847. In 1844 he also served as Deputy Grand Master of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Texas and presided as Grand Master in 1845 and further served the Grand Lodge as its Grand Secretary from 1846 to 1860.
He served the Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Texas as its Secretary in 1850-1851 and again in 1859-1860. Sir Knight Ruthven served as Deputy Grand High Priest in 1856, as well as presiding as Grand High Priest in 1857.
Sir Knight Ruthven was appointed Deputy Grand Commander of the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of Texas at its organization in January 1855 and presided over the Order during Grand Commander Williams tenure. He was elected Grand Commander in June 1855.
Sir Knight Ruthven was called from labor in July of 1865, while on a trip to Glasgow, Scotland.
